I was disappointed at that show to see so many riders having their horses incorrectly collected. Having a horse broke at the poll does not mean he is collected or traveling correctly. Also so many low level dressage riders using flashes or crank nosebands. If your horse is gaping his mouth from your hands it's time to take some lessons, not strap it shut.

Sydney,

I couldn't agree more! If you need that flash or crank to 'keep his mouth shut' you need to go BACK to the drawing board!!

That's why Gilly is bitless now. couldn't stand to see the faces he would make while wearing a bit. Bitless is better!!! :-D

The third photo the horse appears to be very heavy on the forehand as well. It is amazing how horses as well as riders learn to use the bit as a brace or crutch.

The first image is also a good example of how a flash noseband restricts the nasal passages and breathing when applied too tight.

Sydney,
My poor Pippin has all kinds of mouth issues and bits just don't work for him. Is the Nurtural bitless bridle truly the way to go or are there other options in bitless?

That was painful to see. I so agree with the flash, and to make matters worse almost all I can find are dressage bridles with flashes or cranks.
Have you seen this site? http://www.sustainabledressage.com/tack/bridle.php

Beth, Stubben just came out (well, last year) with a gorgeous, traditionally styled hunt bridle. That's what my Holsteiner is wearing into the show ring this year (assuming I get strong enough to be able to go).

And bah humbug to flash nosebands. I WANT you to see how my horse responds to a soft, following contact...with a happy, workmanlike air.

Gr. I love my bitless and enjoy using it or a halter for the majority of my horses' work. I hate how the flash noseband seems to have become a required piece of equipment for dressage now. Those padded crank nosebands aren't any better either...just a "cushy" way to keep the mouth closed.
